Torii

Structure and common types

A typical torii structure has two vertical pillars and two lintels that rest horizontally, with the upper lintel extending past the pillars. Torii are sometimes painted vermillion and generally constructed of wood or stone. Although the styles and materials used in construction may vary from one to another, the presence of a torii is a clear indication of a jinja.

Common types of torii include the Myojin torii, which has an upper lintel that curves upward, and the Shinmei tori, which is unpainted and is characterized by a straight top lintel.
